HOLLYWOOD, Md. — A Hollywood man with a violent criminal history was arrested on June 22, 2025, after allegedly opening fire on a repossession agent attempting to reclaim his vehicle.
Douglas Aaron Chance, 49, of Gallant Fox Drive, is facing six charges—including first-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person—following an armed confrontation with a tow truck operator just after 5 a.m., according to court records.
Deputies with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where the tow truck driver reported he had been assigned to recover a 2021 Ford F-450 registered to Chance. The driver stated he was able to remotely initiate the towing process without exiting his vehicle, a standard procedure for such repossessions.
That’s when Chance allegedly exited his home, leveled a shotgun at the tow truck, and fired one round into the back driver’s side tire, disabling it.
Court documents state Chance then approached the driver’s side window, pointed the shotgun at the driver, and allegedly threatened to “shoot his brains out” if he didn’t leave. The victim quickly retreated and called 911 while waiting for law enforcement.
Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $300. Investigators later recovered a shotgun shell casing near Chance’s vehicle.
A background check with the Maryland Gun Center confirmed that Chance is legally prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior convictions for first-degree burglary, felony theft, and a fourth-degree sex offense.
Chance was taken into custody and refused to speak with deputies after being read his Miranda rights.
He has been formally charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property under $1,000, possession of a shotgun by a disqualified person, and illegal possession of a regulated firearm by a convicted felon.
Chance appeared before Judge James Tanavage on June 23, 2025, for a bond review hearing and was ordered held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 22, 2025, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
