PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — As FY27 budget talks continue for Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS), the district may have to brace for some staffing changes at the non-instructional level.
Calvert’s Board of Education (BOE) will hear the full efficiency report from Public Works LLC next month, but board members and the public got a glimpse of the group’s recommendations at their Jan. 29 meeting through Dr. Newsome’s budget presentation.
The superintendent’s presentation is meant to guide the BOE through an honest assessment of what’s working and what they should prioritize for the next fiscal year. Dr. Newsome stated during the meeting that the draft efficiency report indicates the district is inefficient due to specific staffing gaps in operational roles.
Those suggestions include creating a deputy superintendent of schools and learning, an executive director of teaching and learning, hiring a BOE staff attorney, and a director for communications and community relations, among other roles.
This “administrative reorganization” would add nine full-time-equivalent roles and eliminate six non-instructional full-time-equivalent roles through attrition. Attrition means voluntary resignation or retirement, which occurs each year.
Rather than filling those roles again, the district would use that opportunity to reorganize and fill the identified gaps. Public Works also estimated the district could reduce transportation and IT costs by $12 million over three years. Dr. Newsome noted that he thought this estimate was too high, and his staff believed the feasible savings was closer to $6 million over that time period.
