PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Prince Frederick man was arrested after a late-night traffic stop in Calvert County led to the discovery of a handgun inside his vehicle and a brief struggle with deputies.
Jykiel Eugene Barnes, 25, of Prince Frederick, is charged with Handgun in Vehicle and Resisting/Interfering With Arrest, both misdemeanors, stemming from the February 13, 2026 incident.
According to court documents, at approximately 8:59 p.m., a deputy was traveling northbound on Solomons Island Road at Hallowing Point Road when he observed a white Mercedes-Benz C350 without a front registration plate and displaying expired validation tabs on the rear plate. A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed it was suspended and that the registered owner had a suspended Maryland driver’s license.
A traffic stop was conducted at the intersection. Barnes indicated he did not have his license on him but stated he had a valid driver’s license. A records check through the Motor Vehicle Administration confirmed his license was suspended for failure to appear/compliance suspension. Court documents reflect he had recently been cited for driving on a suspended license days earlier.
Deputies requested an additional unit before placing Barnes under arrest for driving on a suspended license. When instructed to exit the vehicle, he refused multiple times. The deputy opened the driver’s side door and attempted to remove him. As deputies tried to gain control, Barnes reached inside the vehicle with his right arm. Deputies pulled him from the vehicle to prevent access to any weapons or the vehicle being placed in drive.
Once outside, Barnes tensed his arms in an apparent effort to avoid being handcuffed. Deputies were ultimately able to secure him without further incident and placed him in a patrol vehicle.
During the investigation, Barnes indicated there was a handgun inside the vehicle. After deputies requested the Control Center check his status, they were advised Barnes did have a valid handgun permit on file. Deputies searched the vehicle and located a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun under a backpack on the passenger seat. The firearm was unloaded. Next to the handgun was a 10-round Glock magazine loaded with 10 rounds, and an additional round was located inside the bag, for a total of 11 rounds of ammunition recovered.
A records check of the firearm’s serial number showed it was registered to another individual. The handgun, magazine, and ammunition were placed into evidence.
In addition to the criminal charges, Barnes was issued multiple traffic citations, including driving on a highway with suspended registration, driving on a suspended license and privilege, driving without current registration plates and validation tabs, and failure to attach registration plates at the front and rear.
Barnes was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and later released on his own recognizance.
A hearing is set for March 20, 2026, in Calvert District Court.
