SOUTHERN MARYLAND — A Tornado Watch is in effect for St. Mary’s, Charles and Calvert counties until 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The National Weather Service issued Tornado Watch 529 at 4:21 p.m., upgrading the threat across parts of the region where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch had already been in place.
The watch also covers Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard, Carroll, Cecil, Baltimore and Harford counties, along with Baltimore City and the District of Columbia. Several jurisdictions in Northern and Central Virginia are included as well.
Conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.
A watch does not mean a tornado has been spotted. It means residents should be prepared to act quickly if a warning is issued.
Keep phones charged, enable emergency alerts and identify a safe place on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. During a Tornado Warning, move immediately to a basement or small interior room away from windows.
The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. unless the National Weather Service cancels or extends it.
