SOUTHERN MARYLAND — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for St. Mary’s, Charles and Calvert counties until 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 527 at 2:49 p.m. for portions of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
In Maryland, the watch includes 15 counties and Baltimore City. Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard, Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Cecil, Baltimore, Harford and Allegany counties are also included.
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through the afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, while large hail, torrential rainfall and a brief tornado also are possible. Isolated flash flooding could occur in areas that receive repeated or especially heavy storms.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop. It does not mean severe weather is occurring throughout the entire watch area.
Residents should remain alert for later warnings, secure loose outdoor objects and be prepared to move indoors if storms approach. During a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, people should seek shelter in a sturdy building and stay away from windows.
The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. unless it is canceled or extended by the National Weather Service.
