PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Beginning in July 2026, Calvert Safe Housing Network, Inc. will assume operations of the Safe Harbor shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families, through an agreement with the Calvert County Government. Safe Harbor was previously managed and operated by the Calvert County Health Department.
“Calvert Safe appreciates the responsibility entrusted by the County and is honored to continue the legacy of Safe Harbor,” said Kathryn A. Marsh, who serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. “Our board is committed to ensuring that survivors have access to safe shelter, compassionate support, and the resources they need as they rebuild their lives. This transition strengthens our shared mission, deepens our capacity to serve every person who seeks safety, and is an important step toward a more integrated and survivor-centered network in Calvert County.”
Calvert Safe Housing Network, Inc. was founded in February 2025 by Peg Hacskaylo, the organization’s president and executive director. That year, the organization supported 52 women and children through emergency hotel placements, providing almost 1,500 safe nights free from abuse, along with essential supplies, access to community resources and emergency financial assistance. Thirteen of those families ultimately obtained permanent, affordable housing to rebuild their lives and recover from violence.
“The need for safe housing and services for victims of domestic and sexual violence is urgent and growing. This move will help to enhance wraparound services to survivors,” Ms. Hacskaylo said of the shelter transition. “We will continue to leverage our expertise to reach additional residents, increase awareness and—most importantly—serve those experiencing abuse with safe housing.”
