LEONARDTOWN, Md. – On May 19, 2026, Dr. Tom Campbell, principal of St. Mary’s Ryken High School, earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations from Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Dr. Campbell’s dissertation, Teacher Retention: A Qualitative Examination of Significant Factors in Teacher Satisfaction and Decision to Remain in the Profession, focused on educators within the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) network.

“Earning a doctoral degree while leading a school community is an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to Dr. Campbell’s dedication to lifelong learning, servant leadership, and educational excellence,” said St. Mary’s Ryken president, Dr. Rick Wood. “Dr. Campbell was Xaverian educated, leads a Xaverian school, and is now a contributing researcher in confirming the mission of XBSS schools.  On behalf of the entire St. Mary’s Ryken community, we proudly celebrate this milestone and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

His research explored the factors influencing teacher satisfaction and long-term commitment to the profession, with particular emphasis on the impact of community and relationships within Xaverian education.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, Dr. Campbell shared: “The study provided a unique opportunity to connect with teachers from across the XBSS network and better understand what motivates them to continue their important work in the classroom. The findings strongly affirmed the value of the Xaverian commitment to enduring relationships and a strong sense of community in supporting teacher satisfaction and retention. I am deeply grateful to the XBSS Sponsorship Office, Dr. Rick Wood, and all those who participated in the study. Their support and participation made the research and writing process a true extension of our shared mission.”

Dr. Campbell completed the program while serving as principal of St. Mary’s Ryken, where he continues to support the school’s mission of fostering academic growth, faith formation, and community.
