CALIFORNIA, Md. — After this summer, the people of St. Mary’s County will have to look elsewhere for their favorite frozen treats.

Chuck Jacobs, the owner of Kona Ice of St. Mary’s County, posted in a community Facebook group that this summer would serve as a “farewell tour” for his Kona Ice truck due to personal reasons.

“Making our community a better place for everyone was our goal,” Jacobs wrote. “So please, come out and say hello sometime this summer. It means a lot.”

Kona Ice is a shaved-ice truck that operates as a franchise across the United States. The trucks offer tropical flavors that ice enthusiasts can mix and match, as well as nutritional alternatives like dairy-, nut- or sugar-free options, as well as dye-free options.

Local entrepreneurs can get their own trucks to operate independently. Kona Ice prides itself on its many local franchisees and promotes community involvement and collaboration with schools, nonprofits and more.

Jacobs’ truck has been a staple at St. Mary’s events over the years, and commentators jumped in to say how much the Kona Ice team — and their product — would be missed. The truck has operated for more than a decade and attended countless indoor and outdoor events, fundraisers and more.

The BayNet could not confirm an official date when Kona Ice of St. Mary’s County would cease operations, and Jacobs did not immediately return a request for comment.

Residents can find out more about Kona Ice of St. Mary’s County online, including scheduled locations and how to book the truck.
