WALDORF, Md. — A La Plata man was charged with drug possession after police said he was arrested on a failure-to-appear warrant and found with suspected crack cocaine in his pocket.

Trey Franklin Mason, 25, of no fixed address in La Plata, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, not cannabis, following the June 19, 2026, incident.

According to charging documents, an officer tried to make contact with Mason around 7 p.m. at Smallwood Park and Ride, located at 1125 Smallwood Drive in Waldorf.

Charging documents state a records check showed Mason had an active warrant through the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records show the warrant was issued June 15 after Mason failed to appear for a preliminary inquiry in a trespassing case. The warrant was served June 19.

Mason was taken into custody, and during a search incident to arrest, police reported finding a glass smoking device and a white rock-like substance inside a green piece of paper in Mason’s front left pocket.

According to charging documents, Mason allegedly said he knew what the glass smoking device was used for and referred to the substance as crack.

Police used a TruNarc handheld narcotics analyzer to test a sample of the suspected crack cocaine, and the result was positive for cocaine, according to charging documents.

Mason was transported to the Charles County Detention Center. Court records show he was released on recognizance June 19.

A trial in the drug possession case is set for Aug. 11 in Charles County District Court. A separate trial in the trespassing case is set for Aug. 4.
