ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. – As families across Southern Maryland prepare to celebrate Independence Day, pet owners are encouraged to take a few extra precautions to keep their four-legged family members safe during the holiday festivities.

Fireworks, sparklers and large gatherings can be stressful and even dangerous for pets. Experts recommend making sure your pet is wearing a collar with current identification tags and has a registered microchip with up-to-date contact information in case they become frightened and run away.

Creating a quiet, comfortable indoor space away from fireworks and loud noises can also help reduce anxiety. Keep pets away from grills, sparklers, glow sticks and other potentially hazardous items, and be sure to avoid feeding them foods that can be toxic, including cooked bones, onions, garlic, grapes, chocolate and foods containing xylitol.

Pet owners are also encouraged to exercise dogs earlier in the day before celebrations begin to help burn off energy. Once fireworks start after dark, pets should remain indoors in a secure location.

Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control also offers free pet ID tags and low-cost microchipping through its rabies and microchip clinics.

With a little planning, families can help ensure everyone—including their pets—has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.
