Driver Leaves Scene After Car Hits Storm-Damaged Tree, Snapped Pole In Port Republic

PORT REPUBLIC, Md. — Police are investigating after a vehicle struck a storm-damaged tree and snapped utility pole Saturday night in Port Republic before the driver left the scene.

The incident was reported at approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 4, 2026, in the 1600 block of Grays Road.

The storm had knocked a tree into the roadway, snapping a telephone pole. A vehicle then reportedly failed to stop and struck the downed tree and pole.

The caller reported seeing the crash from a nearby home and told dispatchers the vehicle had struck the tree.

The vehicle was later found abandoned, and the driver was not on the scene.

Fire and EMS crews responded to the area. Police are investigating the crash and working to identify the driver.
