CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – The Calvert County Department of Community Resources is providing notice to the public of updates to county policies related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), accessibility and ADA standards.
In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Calvert County Government will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in its services, programs or activities.
Calvert County Government does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its hiring or employment practices and complies with all regulations promulgated by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under Title I of the ADA.
Upon request, Calvert County Government will provide appropriate aids and services to ensure effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in county programs, services and activities. These accommodations may include qualified sign language interpreters, documents in Braille and other methods of making information and communications accessible to people with speech, hearing or vision impairments.
Calvert County Government will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in and enjoy its programs, services and activities. For example, individuals with service animals are welcome in Calvert County Government offices, even where pets are generally prohibited.
In addition, Calvert County Government has updated its ADA Care Attendant Policy, accommodating individuals with disabilities who require a personal care attendant to access county government programs, services and activities. The policy affirms that individuals may not be denied participation because they require a personal care attendant and clarifies that the county does not provide, hire, supervise or pay for attendant services. The policy also establishes standards for fee waivers.
Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a Calvert County Government program, service or activity, should contact ADA Coordinator Kieko Nash at ADACoordinator@calvertcountymd.gov or 410-535-1600, ext. 8803, as soon as possible, but not later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.
Calvert County Government will not place a surcharge on an individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids, services or reasonable policy modifications, such as retrieving items from locations that are open to the public but are not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.
The ADA does not require Calvert County Government to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.
