PAX RIVER, MD — Engineering can be a very challenging, but rewarding career path. If a student has interest in any field of engineering, this program can be eye-opening and look great on their resume.
The Office of Naval Research via the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Educational Outreach Office is offering three sessions of Summer Engineering Exploration Experience (E3) for Students, according to Holly Kellogg, NAWCAD director of STEM & Educational Outreach.
E3 is a one-week summer program for 13-to 15-year-old students being offered at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, said Kellogg.
“Students will have the opportunity to explore various engineering principles, focusing each day on a specific field: Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Chemical, and Computer Engineering. The aim is to enable students to understand the differences between the various fields of engineering and to help them clarify which engineering field they may want to pursue,” said Kellogg.
Students will have the opportunity to build and create while learning about their prospective career field, said Kellogg.
“E3 is fun! They’ll have the chance to launch catapults, make a hydraulic system, create electrical circuits, produce crazy chemical reactions, launch rockets, and more! They will tour various hangars and engineering labs,” said Kellogg. “Plus, they will get to meet, and ask questions of, a variety of scientists and engineers.”
E3 is also free to register, said Kellogg.
“Thanks to the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research via the NAWCAD Educational Outreach Office, there is no charge for registration. Registration is open to all community members. Each student is responsible to bring their own bag lunch, sealable drinks, and any snacks daily,” said Kellogg.
Registration is already closed for the July 18 through 22 session, but there is still the July 25 through 29, and Boy Scouts of middle school age may attend a third session, August 1 through 5.
The program is scheduled from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday on station. Each session is capped at 15 students and registration closes one week prior to each start date, said Kellogg.
