Norfolk, VA โ A Federal judge ordered new sentencing hearings for Lee Boyd Malvo, who is serving life sentences for his role in the random murders of 10 people in the Washington Metro area in 2002.
The order was handed down Friday, May 26 by Judge Raymond Jackson.
Malvo was 17 when he and co-defendant John Allen Muhammad are alleged to have committed the sniper attacks. The killings caused fear throughout the Metro region back in 2002. The pair was subsequently captured in Frederick County, MD.
Muhammad was put to death for his role in the spree in 2009.

The order for reconsideration is based on a 2016 U.S. Supreme Court decision giving constitutional sentencing protections to juveniles.
Malvo also received life sentences in Maryland and those decisions will be subject to hearings next month.
