PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Prince Frederick man is facing felony charges after authorities say he failed to return a rental vehicle valued at approximately $17,000 for more than a month.
Richard Lee Mogel, 58, of Prince Frederick, was arrested following an investigation into a reported vehicle theft at Enterprise Rent-A-Car on Solomons Island Road.
Deputies were dispatched on April 20, 2026, after an employee reported that a customer had failed to return a rental vehicle and had not made contact with the business for an extended period.
The investigation revealed that Mogel had rented the vehicle on January 20, 2026, with an agreement to return it by January 27. However, the vehicle was not returned, and Enterprise later issued a final notice instructing him to bring the vehicle back by March 20, 2026.
Authorities stated the vehicle, identified as a Nissan Versa, remained unreturned beyond the deadline, prompting the company to report it as stolen. The estimated value of the vehicle was listed at approximately $17,000.
Deputies later tracked the vehicle using a license plate reader on Plum Point Road before Mogel contacted the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and advised he would be waiting with the vehicle behind a business in the Chesapeake Beach area.
Upon arrival, deputies located Mogel with the vehicle in a boat yard. Although he stated he intended to return it, Enterprise confirmed they wished to pursue charges. Mogel was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.
He is charged with theft between $1,500 and $25,000 and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
Mogel was released on his own recognizance following a bond review.
A hearing is set for May 26, 2026, in Calvert District Court.
Under Maryland law, theft between $1,500 and $25,000 and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle each carry potential penalties of up to five years in prison and fines.
