Lexington Park, MD — One thing you look forward to when you go away to college is care packages from home. Imagine being a former foster kid away at school with no one to send you cookies or check in to make sure you’re okay.
If you enjoy knitting or crocheting, the Lexington Park Library is offering you a chance to enjoy your hobby while helping out former foster kids by presenting them with a handcrafted reminder that someone cares.
At the Knit One Give Too event on Saturday September 28 from 10 a.m. to noon, knitters and crocheters will create handmade scarves to donate to Foster Care to Success.ย ย
The scarves will be included in care packages sent to college students who are former foster care youth.
Use the yarn and patterns provided by Common Thread, or bring your own.Foster Care to Success offers these guidelines for scarves:
Size: Approximately 60โ long and 5โ to 8โ wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front.
Style: Think unisex collegiate. Fringes are optional. Your scarf should drape, tie easily and be soft.
Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red.
Finished & tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying โHandmade for Youโ with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards, and more.
Anyone not able to attend this event may pick up yarn and patterns at a Common Thread meeting (Tuesdays, October 8 or 22, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Meeting Room A at the library), while supplies last. Scarves not fully completed at this event may be finished at home and dropped off at the library by Friday, November 15. Registration required.
The event will be held in Meeting Room B at the Lexington Park Library in Lexington Park on Saturday, September 28, from – 10:00 a.m. – noon.
