Candidate for Maryland State Delegate, Mark Fisher, in a recent interview with TheBAYNET.com and on Baynet Radio stated that he became a candidate for Delegate because he believes many people in Maryland share a deep concern about the direction in which the state and the country are heading.

โ€œOur elected officials in [Washington] D.C. and Annapolis have ignored our calls for common sense, fiscal restraint and continue to spend our hard earned tax dollars and push us deeper and deeper into debt,โ€ said the candidate.

He continued that even though, given the current economic climate, when officials should be focusing on jobs and economic growth, they continue to foster an environment hostile to job creators. โ€œIt’s time we had leaders that understood that government is not the solution to our economic woes but rather a cause of those problems.โ€

When asked about the issues, Fisher stated that as far as fiscal reform goes, when a reasonable family finds itself with less income they have to tighten their belts and spend less. โ€œThis is true unless that family can create more revenue. Governmentโ€™s canโ€™t do that without raising taxes.โ€

Fisher was asked what he meant by government reform and he stated simply, term limits. โ€œWe need to stop the career-politician idea and put people in office that will work during their terms to fix problems and not to run for office.โ€

On fiscal reform he said that when the governor inherited a $1 billion surplus and spent that within the first year and another $1.5 billion the problem is fairly evident. โ€œWe need to stop spending money. Raising taxes is out of the question. Maryland is already the fourth highest taxed state in the country.โ€

The candidate also feels strongly about reforming education stating that educators need to create a culture of long-term educational thinking and that education is an ongoing process not just how many AP classes high school students attend.

Fisher is an entrepreneur, longtime soccer booster, friend to non-profit groups, neighbor, husband and father. He has served on numerous boards both non-profit and for profit. He understands the balance that is required between earning a living and giving back to the community.

In 2003, Fisher founded Gray’s Field Foundation, a non-profit organization that, among other things, saved an historic African American baseball field from development. Today, Gray’s Field in Owings serves as an athletic field for hundreds of children and families in Calvert County.

Fisher is a lifelong Marylander. Born in Baltimore, he was raised with his three siblings in Baltimore Highlands – a very proud blue collar neighborhood in Baltimore County. He holds a B.A. in International Affairs and Economics from George Washington University. He has been married for 21 years to Deena Fisher of Merrick, New York. The couple has three children, all of whom have been raised in Calvert County.
