Banners proclaiming the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation are now on display in Lexington Park. The first banner was raised Wednesday morning in front of Lexington Park United Methodist Church on Great Mills Road in the center of the streetscape project now under construction.
President/CEO of the Community Development Corporation Robin Finnacom credited the idea for the banners to Patuxent River Naval Air Station Commanding Officer Capt. Stephen Schmeiser. He in turn praised Finnacom for executing the idea.
On hand for the ceremony were many community leaders. Schmeiser handed off the banner to Chairman of the Lexington Park Business and Community Association Mark Pinekenstein who handed it off to Southern Maryland Electric Co-op Board Chairman Joe Stone who in turn handed it over to a SMECO lineman in a bucket truck, who raised the banner on a SMECO pole.
The banners will be visible through the end of the year to the 22,000 employees at the base and the more than 100,000 visitors expected to the base for the Air Expo on Labor Day weekend which will feature the Blue Angels.
According to a press release issued by the Community Development Corporation, โCentennial Celebration posters, pins and commemorative coins are available for sale at the Patuxent River Navy Museum gift shop. Additional commemorative items including tee-shirts, hats and mugs are available at www.lexpark.com web site.โ
