Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged 71-year-old Thomas E. Greene with First-Degree Arson in connection with a fire which occurred earlier today.
At 10:04 a.m., the Mechanicsville, Hollywood, Leonardtown and Seventh District volunteer fire departments were dispatched to 26423 Laurel Grove Road in Mechanicsville for a reported structure fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a vacant single-family dwelling on fire. It took fire crews approximately 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. Damage to the structure was estimated at $25,000; no injuries were reported.
An investigation into the fire’s cause by Deputy State Fire Marshals determined that the fire was intentionally set on the interior of the structure. The fire scene investigation led to the arrest of Greene for being responsible for the fire. Greene was taken into custody and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center without incident. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department is also credited with assisting in this investigation.
If convicted of the charges against him, Greene faces 30 years imprisonment and / or $50,000.00 dollars in fines.
