MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Mechanicsville man is facing a felony charge after deputies say he took a vehicle without permission from his ex-girlfriend in St. Mary’s County, according to court records.
Davin James Sater, 22, of Mechanicsville, was arrested April 20, 2026, following an investigation into a reported stolen vehicle.
According to the statement of probable cause, deputies responded to a residence on Michelle Court after receiving a report of a vehicle possibly stolen out of King George, Virginia.
Authorities located a silver 2017 Chevrolet Malibu at the residence, which was confirmed to be registered to another individual. Investigators said the vehicle had been reported stolen, and its registration information was verified through emergency communications.
Deputies identified Sater as the individual in possession of the vehicle. According to charging documents, he told authorities he had been using the vehicle for about a year and believed he had an arrangement to purchase it, but had not yet completed payment.
Investigators reported the registered owner had reported the vehicle stolen and was not cooperating in arranging its return, leading to the charge.
Sater is charged with motor vehicle unlawful taking, a felony offense.
He was released on his own recognizance following the arrest.
Under Maryland law, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
A hearing is set for May 28, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.
