At 12:43 a.m. April 4, Cpl. M. Clark and Officer D. Sauve responded to the 10000 block of Bunker Hill Road in Waldorf for the report of an armed carjacking.
Matthew John Cassell, 21, of Lusby and Joseph Daniel Bynum, 20, of Faulkner, told officers they were in the parking lot when they were assaulted and carjacked by armed subjects.
A lookout was broadcast based on their statements and Sheriffโs officers and Maryland State Police troopers responded to the area to search for the suspects and the vehicle.
Minutes later, Sheriffโs Cpl. R. Roberts saw the vehicle at rest just off of Berry Road nearby and he and his K9 partner began a track to search for the suspects.
Cpl. Clark responded to the location of the vehicle and discovered Cassellโs and Bynumโs injuries were consistent with injuries they would have sustained as occupants of the vehicle during the crash.
After further investigation, Cassell and Bynum advised the officers the carjacking had not occurred. Their injuries were not life-threatening. Bynum was transported by an ambulance to Southern Maryland Hospital Center for treatment.
Charges are pending. Officer Sauve is investigating.
