LEONARDTOWN, Md. – In a tale that seems straight out of a movie, Leonardtown High School’s boy’s baseball team has won the state championship for the first time in 37 years. What makes this triumph even more extraordinary is the family connection that bridges these two championship teams: Shawn Knott, a star player in 1987, and his son Daniel Knott, who helped lead the team to victory in 2024.

The 2024 Leonardtown High School baseball team had a rollercoaster season, with a 15-8 record. Early in the season, the team struggled to find its identity. Shawn Knott explains the team was trying to find themselves, and it was all just a matter of clicking. The turning point came with a walk-off win that infused the team with newfound confidence. They began to believe in themselves, taking down powerhouse teams and building momentum.

By the time the playoffs arrived, the team had hit its stride. Their defense, shaky at times during the regular season, became rock solid. Coach’s words before the semifinals and state game resonated deeply: “You guys deserve to be here. You didn’t get lucky—you worked hard. We can do anything we put our minds to.”

For Shawn, watching his son Daniel on the field was like living a dream. Shawn had been the center fielder and a key pitcher for the 1987 team, which finished with a paralleling 16-6 record. He went on to play college baseball at a local community college, and University of Maryland. Shawn even played in the minor leagues, yet, one of his crowning achievements remained that state championship win.

Shawn’s grandfather, who raised him after his mother died when he was very young, was a significant influence in his life.

Shawn recalled, “After we won the first state championship in 1987, my grandfather told me, ‘Son, it’s going to be a long, long time before anyone wins this again for Leonardtown. You mark my words.’ At the time, I thought he was crazy. Here we are 37 years later, and who wins the next one? His great-grandson. Wow, just wow.”

When the final out secured Leonardtown’s victory on May 21, Daniel could hardly believe it. He and his father had always talked about this moment, but it seemed like a far-reaching goal.

As the realization sank in, Daniel described it as a whirlwind of emotions. “When it finally happened, there was so much going on in my head,” he said. “We were hugging and screaming—wow.”

In a moment of sheer joy, Daniel ran up the bleachers to grab his father and embrace him. The two also stood in nearly the same spots in their respective championship photos, a poignant reminder of their shared legacy.

Leonardtown’s win is not just a personal victory for Shawn and Daniel but a significant achievement for the entire community. Southern Maryland often feels overlooked compared to the larger surrounding metropolitan areas, but this win brought everyone together. The support from the crowd was electric according to Shawn, demonstrating the town’s love for its teams.

Shawn, who remains in touch with some of his former teammates, constantly updated them during the playoffs, particularly the team’s starting pitcher, who now resides in Florida. The connection between past and present players highlights the tight-knit nature of the community.

Shawn has always encouraged dreaming big, a philosophy he has instilled in Daniel. As Daniel now sets his sights on college baseball and beyond, he carries with him the lessons and legacy of his father.

“So much has to go right for this to happen,” Shawn mused. “As it was unfolding, it was movie stuff.”

Indeed, this story is one for the ages—a testament to the power of dreams, the bond of family, and the enduring spirit of a community. Leonardtown High School’s state championship win in 2024 is more than a victory on the baseball field; it is a celebration of history, hope, and the remarkable journey from one generation to the next.

  1. This would have been a great story for the local Radio station to cover.. but they would rather complain about national politics. SAD. They could have interviewed the coach/players.
