Maryland state basketball playoffs

The seeding meeting for Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Boys Basketball playoffs having took place Tuesday morning, Feb. 23. The brackets to determine ย state champions have been released to the public.

All of SMAC made the playoffs in their respective regions, and some start play as early as Friday, Feb. 26.

There are some games in the area Friday, and one is between Leonardtown and Chopticon. The game will be played at Leonardtown. Leonardtown swept the season series with Chopticon, and look to make it a clean sweep this Friday night. They play in the 4A East, and one other team from SMAC is in that region. North Point earned the number one seed in the region. They play their first playoff game on the 29th, and will take on the winner of South River and Broadneck.

In the 3A South, 4 schools from the conference will look to make deep runs into the postseason. Huntingtown and Great Mills earned the top two seeds and both have locked up first round byes. Meanwhile, St. Charles and Northern have to play Friday in order to advance. St. Charles will play host to Potomac on Friday, and Northern will travel to Oxon Hill. Huntingtown plays the winner of Potomac-St. Charles, and Great Mills will have the winner of Northern-Oxon Hill.

The 2A South–this region will be the definition of a gauntlet. Half of the region is between 6 SMAC teams, and the other half is Prince Georges County schools. In the SMAC side, Westlake and Patuxent have first round byes. Thomas Stone will play host to Calvert on Friday, while La Plata will play host to Lackey. Whoever wins this section will have to play the team that endures the Prince Georges County half of the region. In that half, only Gwynn Park has a bye this Friday. Every other team has to play on Friday. Lastly, in the 1A North, McDonough will play host to Tall Oakes on Friday.ย 

This yearโ€™s playoffs are set up to be an entertaining two weeks. The semifinals and finals are at the Xfinity Center in College Park beginning March 10 and the finals are March 12.
