BRANDYWINE, Md. — A 33-year-old Temple Hills woman has died following a police pursuit that ended in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 301 in Brandywine.
The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General identified the woman as Alexis Cummings, 33, of Temple Hills.
The crash occurred Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, near Route 301 and McKendree Road, close to the Prince George’s County and Charles County line.
According to the preliminary investigation, Charles County sheriff’s officers attempted to stop a vehicle around 10:20 a.m. after receiving information from law enforcement in Arlington County, Virginia.
The vehicle fled from the traffic stop, and Charles County officers pursued it.
The fleeing vehicle later collided with two uninvolved vehicles on Route 301 just south of McKendree Road. Officers arrived at the crash scene shortly afterward.
Two adult women who had been inside the fleeing vehicle were transported to an area hospital. One of them, now identified as Cummings, was initially reported in grave condition and later died.
An adult woman in one of the uninvolved vehicles was also injured and transported to a hospital.
No officers were injured.
The Attorney General’s Office identified the Charles County sheriff’s officers involved as PFC Eddie Vanover, a five-year veteran, and Cpl. Justin Bottorf, a 13-year veteran. Both are assigned to the Patrol Division.
The Independent Investigations Division is investigating the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
The officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, and their patrol vehicles had dashboard cameras.
The IID generally releases body-camera and dashboard-camera footage within 20 business days, although that timeline can be extended for reasons including witness interviews, technical processing or allowing family members to view the footage before public release.
