Spring is in the air and mothers are on everyoneโs mind this weekend in Southern Maryland. Saturday features a number of outdoor events and Sunday includes a number of opportunities to treat mom to a good breakfast.
The annual St. Maryโs Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) Animal Fair at the St. Maryโs Count Fairgrounds is one of the main events for the weekend. Each year more than a thousand humans and their four-legged friends attend the event sponsored by the non-profit rescue organization. Gates open at 10 and the event lasts until 4 with K-9 demonstrations, a musical dog sit, king and queen pageant, pet parade, blessing of the pets, parade of horse breeds and pet pageant. A number of outdoor flea markets and plant sales are also on Saturdayโs agenda. Summerseat Farm on Route 235 in Oakville is holding its 9th Annual Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to a huge plant selection there will be food and drinks, crafts, Motherโs Day gifts and garden information. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp at 2880 Grays Road in Prince Frederick is holding a herb and wildflower sale on Saturday from 9 .m. to 1 p.m. Check www.calvertparks.org.
Middleham/St. Peterโs Episcopal Church on H.G. Trueman Road ย in Lusby is holding its annual MayFest on Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to noon. It includes a large selection of plants, antiques, books, collectables and sporting equipment.
Also, there will be a community yard sale at the La Plata Town Hall beginning at 8.am. And thereโs a community yard sale in the Breton Bay neighborhood of Leonardtown from 9 a.m. to noon that includes a plant sale by the Garden Club of Breton Bay.
Calvert County is one of the stops this year on the annual Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage. This year several homes in Scientists Cliffs will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. For more information go to www.mhgp.org.
American Legion Post 293 on Old Washington Road in Waldorf is holding a car show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that was postponed from its original April 16 date. Proceeds support American Legion programs.
