The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office Bomb Squad, Maryland Park Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District continues to assess and sweep the shoreline of Newtowne Neck State Park due to the recent discovery of military ordnance.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office Bomb Squad have conducted underwater surveys
along the shoreline for additional military ordnance. As a result of Tuesdayโs sweep, eight .57 mm
rounds were located underwater. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, is
continuing their research into the origin of the ordnance.
Citizens are reminded to maintain a safe distance if they encounter military ordnance
or similar objects. Citizens are encouraged to practice the “3R’s”. “Recognize that any suspicious
objects found in the area should not be touched under any circumstances. Retreat, or carefully
leave the area. Report immediately what was found and its approximate location to the police.”
All three agencies will continue their sweeps and assess the shoreline of Newtowne Neck
State Park today. At this time, Newtowne Neck State Park remains closed and will remain
closed until deemed safe for public use.
