Dinah H. Harvey, a veteran of the United States Postal Service retired after nearly four decades of service– the last 14 years as postmaster in picture-pretty St. Mary’s City across from the collegeย in the historic district.

“In the beginning I was at Hyattsville, Maryland, then Riverdale Maryland, and then Capitol Heights,” Harvey told The Bay Net.

Commissioner Dan Raley (D. Great Mills) attended the farewell partyย for Harvey at the post office Thursday. The party saw people of all ages and color throng the place to express gratitude to Harvey for her work.

Harvey, who has made St. Mary’s City her home since then, nowย wants to serve the community in a different capacity. “I am starting a small business, house sitting, dog sitting, running errands and doing small chores for the community,” she said.

She described her experience working as post master at St. Mary’sย City as a wonderful experience.

Michelle Marble, who has worked 18 years in the postal service–six of them at St. Mary’s City post officeย working withย Harvey– called her former supervisor a very nice and pleasant person to work with. “She was patient with teaching me what I wanted,” Marble said.

But Marble was delighted Harvey would not be going far. “We are all friends and we will see each other,” she said.

Raley, speaking during the commissioner’s time Tuesday lauded Harvey’s services and said over the decades the county has come a long way in postal service development.

“Who would have thought you could go to the post office and get your passport (in St. Mary’s City),” Raley said. “Who could have thought you could go to a post office and buy stamps with a credit card.”

Harvey saidย for the postal community in St. Mary’s City was one of the greatest places to end work in the entire state.
