Maryland State Police Trooper 7

LA PLATA, Md. — A woman was critically injured after being ejected into a ravine and three young children, including a 2-month-old infant, were hurt in a violent crash Friday night in La Plata.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. May 9, 2026, in the area of Mitchell Road near Durham Court. An automated iPhone crash alert triggered the initial 911 call, with reports of a vehicle in a ditch and children crying inside.

First responders arriving on scene discovered the woman, believed to be in her 30s, had been thrown from the vehicle and was located down an embankment. Crews initiated a complex rescue operation to access and remove her from the ravine.

Three children, a 2-month-old, a 2-year-old, and an 8-year-old, were also found injured.

Due to the severity of injuries, multiple medical helicopters were requested. Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 2 transported the woman to an area trauma center. Trooper 7 airlifted the infant and toddler to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. The 8-year-old was taken by ambulance to the same hospital, accompanied by a family member.

Additional patients were evaluated and transported from the scene as emergency crews worked for several hours to manage the incident and clear the wreckage.

The investigation remains ongoing.
