LA PLATA, Md. — A 23-year-old inmate is facing additional charges after authorities say he made inappropriate contact with a nurse during a medical evaluation inside the Charles County Detention Center.
Wesley Lionel Harley, 23, of Waldorf, is charged with fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault in connection with the May 1, 2026, incident, according to court records.
Charging documents state the incident occurred inside the Charles County Detention Center on Crain Highway while Harley was in custody.
Investigators say a nurse reported that during a routine intake evaluation, Harley repeatedly made inappropriate requests before leaning toward her and making contact with his mouth on her chest area.
Authorities said the contact left a visible wet mark on the nurse’s clothing.
According to the report, video from the intake area was reviewed and showed Harley leaning forward toward the nurse while she was bent over, making contact with his mouth.
Investigators noted it was unclear whether the contact was intended as a kiss or a bite, but confirmed physical contact occurred.
Harley was already being held at the detention center at the time of the incident and remained in custody following the new charges.
A bail review hearing was held May 4, 2026, before Judge Patrick J. Devine in Charles County District Court, where Harley was ordered held without bond.
Another bail review hearing was scheduled for May 12, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
A hearing is set for June 17, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
Under Maryland law, fourth-degree sex offense is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, while second-degree assault carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine if convicted.
