Prince Frederick, MD – A motorist from St. Mary’s County involved in a two-vehicle collision Labor Day weekend that claimed the life of a Calvert County man is no longer facing alcohol-related charges in relation to the crash.
According to court documents, the charges filed against Robert Wayne Rambo, 57 of California, include driving, attempting to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol; driver, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by alcohol; homicide with a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and life-threatening injuries with a vehicle while impaired were all dropped Monday, Oct. 19.
“There is not probable cause,” Calvert County Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Rappaport told The BayNet. “More investigation needs to be done to determine probable cause.”
The crash involving a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Rambo and a 2003 GMC Envoy driven by Peter Schroeder, 59 of Chesapeake Beach, occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 on Route 231 near Heather Road in Prince Frederick.
Schroeder was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor. A passenger in the Envoy, identified as Mary Schroeder, 54 of Chesapeake Beach, was flown by Maryland State Police (MSP) helicopter to the MedStar trauma center in Washington, DC. Rambo was also flown by MSP helicopter to MedStar.
“Preliminary investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Team revealed the Chevrolet Silverado operated by Rambo was traveling westbound along Route 231 when it crossed the double yellow center line and drove onto the shoulder,” a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office press release stated. “The GMC Envoy was traveling eastbound on Route 231. The operator of the Envoy drove onto the eastbound shoulder in an effort to avoid being struck by the Chevrolet Silverado. The Chevrolet Silverado struck the Envoy on the eastbound shoulder, pushing the Envoy backwards, and destroyed the Envoy’s passenger compartment.”
Deputies at the scene detected the smell of alcohol from the Silverado’s passenger’s compartment. Deputies went to MedStar to administer a blood draw from Rambo to determine blood alcohol content.
