HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — Two men were arrested after a Calvert County sheriff’s deputy reported seeing a Subaru repeatedly cross lane and shoulder markings on Route 4 before a traffic stop led to a reported .16 breath test result and the discovery of suspected cocaine inside the vehicle.
Efrain Reyes-Alquejay, 27, of Salisbury, and Rigo Verto Yxen, 34, were arrested Aug. 17 and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, according to District Court records.
Reyes-Alquejay, who police identified as the driver, also received multiple traffic citations stemming from the incident, including allegations of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, failure to obey a properly placed traffic control device and driving without a license.
According to a statement of probable cause filed by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, a corporal was traveling north on Route 4 near Fox Run Boulevard in Prince Frederick at approximately 11:32 p.m. Aug. 16 when he noticed a gray Subaru traveling in front of his patrol vehicle.
The corporal reported that the Subaru repeatedly moved back and forth within its lane, crossing the center and shoulder lines numerous times.
After passing Traders Boulevard, the Subaru allegedly crossed the dividing line between two lanes before moving back into its lane. The corporal reported that each time the vehicle crossed the center line, it remained over the line for approximately one vehicle length.
Near Hospital Road, the deputy said the Subaru crossed the shoulder line twice. On the first occasion, the passenger-side tires allegedly went completely across the shoulder line before the vehicle returned to its lane.
During the second instance, approximately half of the Subaru allegedly crossed onto the shoulder before returning to the roadway.
Another vehicle was traveling in the area at the time, according to the report.
The corporal initiated a traffic stop on northbound Route 4 near M.F. Bowen Road in Huntingtown.
As the corporal approached the passenger side, he reported seeing multiple open and unopened Modelo beer cans inside the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Reyes-Alquejay through an identification card. Yxen, who was sitting in the passenger seat, reportedly did not have identification with him.
Because of a language barrier, the deputy communicated with both men using translation services, according to the probable cause statement.
Reyes-Alquejay allegedly told the corporal that he did not have a driver’s license.
When asked about alcohol consumption, Reyes-Alquejay reportedly acknowledged drinking and estimated that he had consumed approximately two alcoholic beverages.
The corporal asked Reyes-Alquejay to step out of the Subaru. According to the report, the deputy detected what he described as a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Reyes-Alquejay’s breath.
Police also alleged Reyes-Alquejay had bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech and slow movements.
Reyes-Alquejay agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests and was later offered a roadside preliminary breath test, which he agreed to take. Police reported the preliminary test produced a reading of .17.
The preliminary breath test was part of the roadside investigation and was separate from an evidentiary breath test administered later, according to the charging documents.
Reyes-Alquejay was subsequently placed under arrest in connection with the DUI/DWI investigation and advised of his rights regarding chemical testing.
Another deputy arrived at the scene and assisted with a search of the Subaru following Reyes-Alquejay’s arrest.
During the search, investigators allegedly discovered a small torn plastic bag that had been knotted and contained a white powder.
Police identified the substance in the charging documents as suspected cocaine.
According to the probable cause statement, the suspected cocaine was found underneath the driver’s rear floor mat near the back seat.
Investigators also reported finding numerous Modelo beer cans throughout the rear of the vehicle, including opened cans, unopened cans and one opened can that still contained some alcoholic beverage.
After being advised of his Miranda rights through a translator, Reyes-Alquejay agreed to speak with investigators.
Police said Reyes-Alquejay denied ownership of the suspected cocaine. According to the charging document, he told investigators that Yxen used cocaine but said he did not know whether the substance found inside the vehicle belonged to him.
Investigators then separately advised Yxen of his Miranda rights through a translator.
According to the probable cause statement, Yxen allegedly told investigators that the suspected cocaine belonged to both him and Reyes-Alquejay.
Yxen reportedly said the two men had not purchased the suspected cocaine but that it had been given to them.
Police subsequently arrested Yxen on a controlled dangerous substance allegation.
Yxen was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center by a Maryland State Police trooper.
The suspected cocaine was placed into evidence at the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and was to be sent to the Maryland State Police laboratory for further examination, according to the charging documents.
Reyes-Alquejay was separately transported to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for an evidentiary alcohol breath test.
According to the probable cause statement, a certified breath-test administrator conducted the test at approximately 1:38 a.m. Aug. 17, and police reported that Reyes-Alquejay registered .16 BrAC.
He was then transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.
Investigators also learned through the Calvert County Control Center that Reyes-Alquejay did not have a driver’s license, according to the report.
The charging document further alleges his driving privilege in Maryland had previously been suspended for failure to appear or comply and for failure to obtain mandatory insurance.
Reyes-Alquejay and Yxen were each charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Court records show both men were released on their own recognizance Aug. 17, meaning neither was required to post monetary bail.
Both cases are scheduled for trial Oct. 1, 2026, in Calvert County District Court.
