BALTIMORE — The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General released body-worn camera footage Aug. 28 from a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred July 31 at Fort Washington Park in Prince George’s County.
The man who died was previously identified as 30-year-old Alex Charles of Fort Washington.
According to the preliminary investigation, shortly after 6 p.m. July 31, officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George’s County Division, the Prince George’s County Police Department and the U.S. Park Police responded to a report of a shooting and a man walking near the river with a gun in Fort Washington Park.
An officer with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police encountered Charles near the river. During the encounter, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Charles.
Charles was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered a handgun near him, according to the attorney general’s office. No officers were injured during the incident.
Shortly after the shooting, U.S. Park Police officers arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
The Independent Investigations Division released body-worn camera footage from the incident Aug. 28 as its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting continues.
