La Plata, MD – One of two defendants charged with the murder of Robert Michael Mange, 25, of Norfolk, VA in a Waldorf McDonaldโs parking lot in last year got the only break he is liable to get from the Charles County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office Friday, April 22, when Charles County Circuit Court Judge Amy J. Bragunier granted a continuance to Defense Attorney C.T. Wilson.
Wilson said his duties as a legislator in Annapolis, which just concluded, prohibited him from devoting full time to the case.
โIโm asking for a continuance,โ Wilson said. โThis is a very complex case.โ
โItโs dragging on and on,โ Bragunier noted.
โIโm going to leave this up to the court,โ Charles County Stateโs Attorney Tony Covington told Bragunier. โI admit, thereโs a lot of discovery.โ
Richard Travess Conway, 27 of Waldorf, was charged May 20, 2015 with 13 counts ranging from first-degree murder to reckless endangerment.
The defendant’s ex-wife was among the two victims of a shooting when Conway’s mother, Caroline Conway, got into the back seat of her ex-daughter-in-lawโs car, produced a 40-caliber handgun and allededly shot Robert Michael Mange, 25, of Norfolk, VA, and his wife as they sat in their car in the parking lot waiting to pick up two children for visitation.
Mange was fatally wounded in the attack. His wife was later released from the hospital.
Investigators determined that Richard Conway and his mother were accomplices in the attack. Richard Conway is a former Prince Georgeโs County police officer.ย
Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry said during a May 26, 2015 press conference regarding the murder that Conwayโs mother made some admission that her sonโs service weapon, which was not located, may have been used in the attack.
Caroline Conway’s trial is set in Charles County Circuit Court for June 6.
Covington told the court that some discovery information was just released to Wilson.ย โThat information just came up,โ he said. โI think itโs going to require some looking into.โ He said the discovery includes 32 hours of audio.
โSo, youโre not going to be doing anything but this trial from now until the next court date,โ Bragunier told Wilson.
โIt looks like it,โ he responded.
Bragunier set motions for May 16, the date Conwayโs trial was due to start.
Covington said with the delay, it could be later this year before the case can be brought to trial.
