Maryland Governor Larry Hogan will not challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

โ€œI will not be a candidate,โ€ Hogan Tweeted. He said he was thankful for โ€œall of the encouragement.โ€

The Baltimore Sun reported that Hogan said that instead of running, he would start โ€œAn America United,โ€ a national nonprofit advocacy organization.

Hogan was the hopeful candidate for the Never Trump Republicans. He said in February that he has no interest in a โ€œkamikaze missionโ€ in regards to Trumpโ€™s leadership and has openly criticized Trumpโ€™s presidency.

In a statement Saturday, Hogan said he wants to continue to honor the commitment he made to the people of Maryland where the parties work together to find โ€œcommon-sense solutions to the serious problems facing our state.โ€

He also made mention of his new role as the incoming chairman of the National Governors Association.
