ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Annapolis is celebrating the official name change of one of its streets in a ceremony on May 30.
Northwest Street, between Church Circle and College Creek, is slated to be changed to “De Lorma ‘Dee’ Goodwyn Way” in honor of Dee Goodwyn. Goodwyn passed away earlier this year and was a community advocate who “gave generously of her time to improve her community,” according to a Facebook post by the City of Annapolis and a press release.
“She is greatly missed by all who knew her,” the post said.
The change was approved by the Annapolis City Council in March. Mayor Jared Littmann and the Caucus of African American Leaders will hold an event at Northwest Street and Calvert Street to unveil the new street sign on May 30 at noon. Attendees can park for free at Whitmore Garage.
In addition to the ceremony, Mayor Littmann will present a proclamation declaring the day “Dee Goodwyn Day” in Annapolis to acknowledge Goodwyn’s commitment to community and her advocacy for civil rights.
Goodwyn passed away in January. According to a statement from the mayor, she was a lifelong resident of Annapolis and a graduate of Annapolis High School and the University of Maryland. She was a founding member of the Caucus of African American Leaders, and she spearheaded efforts to build the Guardians of the First Amendment Memorial in downtown Annapolis to honor the journalists and staff killed at the Capital Gazette newspaper in 2018. She was also a champion of the Parren J. Mitchell memorial that sits outside the Pip Moyer Recreation Center on Hilltop Lane in Annapolis. She served the residents of Annapolis as a member of the city’s Human Relations Commission and, more recently, on the county’s Personnel Board. She is survived by family members.
