Explosions at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon have caused reaction throughout the world. In Southern Maryland, the horrific incident has members of the running community concerned about friends and fellow athletes who were participating in the race.

The explosions, which rocked the Hub City shortly before 3p.m., resulted in the deaths of at least three people and injuries toย over 100 people.

Shortly after news reports and images of the chaotic aftermath began appearing on televisions, computer screens and hand-held devices, the Facebook page of the Chesapeake Bay Running Club (CBRC) began showing a thread with inquiries and comments.

โ€œThe pictures make me want to cry,โ€ stated one poster.

ย

Among some of the other comments by club members and Facebook friendsโ€”โ€œheartbreaking and horrifying,โ€ โ€œthis is sick and twisted. How can people do this?โ€

One poster said she had planned to participate in todayโ€™s marathon but couldnโ€™t because she broke her foot.

According to Liza Recto of CBRC, three Southern Maryland residents affiliated with the club ran in the event. Tommy Rudowski of Lexington Park finished the race in 2 hours and 46 minutes. Also participating were John and Cindy Hagan of Lusby. Recto said she had spoken to them and they were fine. While many CBRC members annually qualify for the Boston Marathon, some either decide not to go or are not able to participate because they missed the signup due date.
