LEXINGTON PARK, Md. โ Now, more than ever, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, (STEM), programs need community support; so when there is an opportunity to support a grassroots effort at the ground level, you take it.
Recently, President and owner of AVIAN LLC, Kevin Switick, became the first local small business owner to sponsor the Lexington Park Elementary STEM for All educational program.
โBuilding a STEM culture doesnโt happen overnight; it requires community support, Switick said. โWeโre thrilled to support this project and look forward to the opportunities it provides to the youth in this area.โ ย
STEM for All was developed by St. Maryโs County Board of Education. Lexington Park Elementary Principal, Dr. Curtis Alston, envisions developing a STEM for ALL outdoor learning center in the schoolโs courtyard.ย He wants each child to experience live science activities.
โThis project is very special to me,โ Alston said. โHaving the support of a local business means a lot. It shows how great our community is and how dedicated we all are to giving our future generations as many opportunities as possible. This program will help build a STEM for All environment that stimulates curiosity and innovation, engaging students with hands on learning and curriculum enrichment. โ
The outdoor learning center ground breaking event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 from 1-2 p.m., allowing students of Lexington Park Elementary to participate in ecological exploration.
STEM for All has the support of teachers, students, families and now local business. As they move forward, STEM for All hopes to continue to expand fundraising to help this program come to life.
โThe outdoor learning center will light a spark under the burners of a whole generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians, but to make it happen theyโll need continued support, said Bart Ludlow of AVIAN.
Ludlow supports the school his children attend and is leading STEM for All fundraising by coordinating donations in support of STEM For All projects. All donations are tax-exempt. For anyone interesting in donating, please contact Bart Ludlow, at bart.ludlow@avianllc.com, or 301.481.3043.
