Waldorf, MD – Saturday, December 15, North Point High School hosted the 7th annual DMV Tip-Off Classic. The event featured seven games, starting at 11 a.m. and ending after the last game at 8 p.m.
The first game featured McKinley Tech, which kept their record perfect on a last-second shot. The game was back and forth, with Gwynn Park staying ahead most of the contest. The Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to six at the end of the third period, but McKinley knotted the score at 46 with 1:50 left. Gwynn Park then scored and maintained a one-point lead, 48-47, under 30 seconds when they started getting fouled. With less than 15 seconds left Corey Bullock (Sr.) set his feet at the free-throw line and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Eric Wright (Sr.), the tallest player on the court at 6’9”, easily snatched the offensive rebound and put the ball back up. The basketball dribbled across the rim and into the hands of a McKinley Tech player who quickly moved it to senior guard Tervondre Williams. Williams quickly dribbled to the top of the key and put up a shot just as the buzzer sounded. The ball fell straight through the net and Williams was swarmed by his team, all while maintaining a composed look on his face. The crushing defeat handed Gwynn Park their second loss and propelled the McKinley Tech to 8-0.
The event’s second game featured Theodore Roosevelt (DC) versus Potomac. The Wolverines maintained control throughout the game, winning 44-54. The win gave Potomac their second victory (2-0) and Roosevelt their fourth loss (4-4).
The third game was the first of three to feature a SMAC basketball team, pitting Westlake against Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC). The Wolverines represented Southern Maryland well, beating the Falcons 67-59. Junior Guard/Forward Cameron Tweedy lead the team with a double-double, 27 points, and 13 blocks. Tweedy was helped out by strong play from Senior Guard Jabari Davis who had 14 points and 7 assists. The win was the Wolverines third at the time. The team has since won one more and are (4-1) on the year.
The other two SMAC games were Bishop O’Connell (VA) versus St. Charles and Wise versus North Point. Both SMAC teams lost 90-61 and 77-62 respectively.
