On Friday, July 24, the Newark Bears defeated the red hot Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-2 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.
The Bears were strong out of the gate scoring three runs in the first inning. Charlton Jimerson swiped his twentieth stolen base of the season and scored on a Tike Redman RBI groundout. Second baseman Andres Perez picked up one run with two hits.
Newarkโs left-hander Matt Smith pitched an impressive five and two thirds innings allowing only two earned runs and four hits. Shane Komine notched his first save of the season after holding off the Crabs for three and a third innings striking out four, allowing no runs. Southern Marylandโs Joe Gannon pitched for eight innings allowing five earned runs and took the loss, which brings his record to 7-11 for the season.
The Bears will face the Blue Crabs on Saturday and Sunday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
