Washington, DC. — With the announcement of a proposed settlement to victims of the Equifax data breach, it’s no surprise that scammers are jumping on the bandwagon and putting up fake settlement sites, designed to steal victims’ information all over again or trick them into paying unnecessary fees.

When you go to the genuine settlement site, you can find out if you were a victim and file to receive your share of the settlement. Most victims are eligible for $120 in cash or identity fraud monitoring services. 

The Federal Trade Commission is already warning consumers about these fake sites. Remember, you won’t be asked to pay any money for the legitimate settlement site. 

And if anyone calls you about the settlement, it is almost certainly a scam.
