The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs faced off against the Sugar Land Skeeters in the final game of their three-game series Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. With their eyes set on sweeping the Skeeters, the Blue Crabs turned to left-handed pitcher Wade Korpi (3-5, 4.98). The Skeeters would counter right-handed pitcher, Cesar Carrillo (0-1, 4.35). Korpi would get off to a hot start, blanking the Skeeters batters through the first three innings but a grand slam in the fourth would be enough as Sugar Land would take the final game of the series, 5-1.

After working through the first three innings without allowing the Skeeters to push across a run, Korpi would get into trouble in the fourth inning when Skeeters first basemen, Aaron Bates would walk to lead off the inning and with two outs, two more Skeeters would reach to load the bases. Sugar Land’s left fielder, Michael Rockett would deposit the 3-1 delivery just over the wall in left.  The Skeeters offense would tack on insurance runs in the fifth on an Aaron Bates solo-homer and four more in the ninth.

As they have all season, the Blue Crabs would have remain resilient. In the home half of the fifth, infielder Jake Opitz would start the inning off with a walk. Opitz would advance all the way to third on wild pitches. After leftfielder Cole Garner walked to put runners on first and third, CF Sean Smith would hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score Opitz. It would be the only run the Crabs could muster, as the Skeeters would hold on for the 5-1 victory.
