UPDATE: The proposal is for a Banana Ball world tour game, which does not guarantee an appearance by the Savannah Bananas.
LA PLATA, Md. — One of the most talked-about shows in baseball could be coming to Southern Maryland as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs pursue hosting a Banana Ball World Tour game at Regency Furniture Stadium in 2027.
The Charles County Board of Commissioners approved a letter of support on March 17, 2026, backing the Blue Crabs’ effort to bring the nationally popular baseball entertainment event to Waldorf.
Blue Crabs General Manager Christian Heimall told commissioners the organization was invited to submit a request as the Banana Ball Championship League continues expanding its national tour.
“We at the Blue Crabs are looking at every possible way to enhance the experience here at our stadium and bring different opportunities for family-friendly and affordable entertainment to Southern Maryland,” Heimall said.
Known for dancing players, fan interaction and fast-paced rules designed to keep games moving, Banana Ball has grown into a national sports entertainment attraction.
“For those who may not be accustomed to the Savannah Bananas, this is a very fun, engaging, fan-focused team that is based out of Savannah, Georgia, but over the last couple of years have grown in popularity where they had created their own league,” Heimall said.
Heimall also pointed to the team’s recent large-venue success.
“They just sold out the New Orleans Superdome, which is mind-blowing to think about that,” Heimall said.
The Savannah Bananas sold out Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for back-to-back games March 14–15, 2026, drawing about 70,000 fans each night and marking the first baseball games played in the stadium in more than 20 years. The team joined a short list of major acts to sell out the venue on consecutive nights, including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and The Rolling Stones.
Heimall said the Blue Crabs see the potential event as an opportunity to bring that same excitement to Southern Maryland.
For those unfamiliar with Banana Ball, a commissioner compared the experience to the Harlem Globetrotters, and Heimall agreed, describing it as a blend of traditional baseball and entertainment.
According to the county’s letter of support, Charles County’s location within the Washington metropolitan region and the Blue Crabs’ track record of hosting large sporting and community events make the stadium a strong candidate. Officials said the event could draw visitors from across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., while supporting local restaurants, hotels and tourism.
If selected, the Banana Ball stop would be a one-day event. The game has not yet been awarded, but the county’s support is part of the formal process to strengthen the Blue Crabs’ proposal.
