Calvert County, MD — Calvert County athletes brought home four individual and team state championships during the spring season.
The Board of Education presented resolutions honoring their dedication and success. Dr Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “These athletes, their families, and their coaches devote countless hours to their sport. Congratulations to all!”
Justin Diehl of Calvert High capped off an impressive high school running career by winning the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 2A State Outdoor Track & Field 3200m. Justin holds Calvert High records in the 1600m (4:20.65), 3000m (8:32.84), and 3200m (9:10.43). He was coached by John Urban.
Singles tennis player Taiyo Tougas from Huntingtown High School won the 2019 MPSSAA 3A State Championship—the first for Huntingtown since the inception of the program. Taiyo competed four years in men’s singles and went undefeated in regular season match play (59-0), also winning the Class 3A South Regional Championship. The team is under the leadership of head coach Amy Trainer and coaches Eric White, Rachael Ulmer, and Brooke Sneeuwjagt.
Christierra CiCi Williams of Patuxent High School was the champion in the MPSSAA 2A long jump and triple jump. In her first year on the Patuxent outdoor track and field team, she also won the MPSSAA 2A South Outdoor Regional and SMAC long jump and triple jump. The team is coached by Dave Walser.
The Huntingtown High softball team won their second consecutive 3A Softball State Championship and the fifth in the history of Huntingtown High. They also won their fourth consecutive 3A Sought Regional Championship. The team is coached by head coach Michael Johnson and assistant coaches Jordon DeGennaro and Ronnie Seger.
