OXON HILL, Md. — A frightened cat was rescued without injury after a witness reported seeing someone throw the animal from a moving vehicle while crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
Officers with the Prince George’s County Division of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police responded Sunday, July 12, 2026, after a concerned citizen reported the suspected act of animal cruelty.
When officers arrived, they found the small orange-and-cream cat near the bridge railing.
An officer calmly encouraged the frightened animal to move away from the edge and toward safety.
“Come on, I got you,” the officer can be heard saying as the cat cautiously moved along the bridge structure.
The officer successfully recovered the cat without injury.

The cat was placed in care following the rescue and is now receiving treatment and attention.
Park Police credited the witness for immediately reporting the incident and praised the responding officer for acting quickly and compassionately.
“We commend the citizen for speaking up and our officer for taking immediate action to protect a defenseless animal,” the agency stated.
Authorities emphasized that animal cruelty is taken seriously and encouraged anyone who witnesses abuse or neglect to report it immediately.
No information about the person accused of attempting to throw the cat from the vehicle was immediately released, and it was unclear whether any charges had been filed.
The incident remains under investigation.
