Calvert County Adds Six New Correctional Deputies 

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office welcomed six new correctional deputies after the recruits completed their training this past December and May.

Sheriff Ricky Cox introduced the new deputies to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) at the June 16 meeting. All six are recent graduates of the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy’s 11-week Corrections Entry Level Training Academy.

The graduates “demonstrated resilience through a program that was mentally, physically and academically demanding. This celebration provides a meaningful opportunity for the new correctional deputies, their families, friends, fellow deputies, the BOCC and the public to collectively recognize and commemorate this significant achievement,” Sheriff Cox wrote in a memo.

Introducing the new deputies is part of the county’s tradition to welcome new officers to the county. The BOCC joined Sheriff Cox in welcoming Katelyn Tkach, Robert Bingham, Dominic Jones, Avery Vaulina, Ariana Dea and Bryce Curtis.

According to Sheriff Cox’s remarks during the meeting, all six of the deputies are graduates of Calvert County high schools. Cox added that he makes it a point to recruit in high schools to find deputies who will rise through the ranks and “serve our county for twenty plus years.” He also called out several new deputies who have parents working in the department.

Additionally, Tkach earned the Steve Allen Leadership Award at the academy. Tkach was on a scheduled vacation and was not in attendance at the BOCC meeting.
