Each school day, 19 high school students from all four high schools in Calvert County can be found learning how to save people’s lives and property. These students are a part of the year long Calvert County Fire/EMS Cadet Program. The program is open to anyone who is at least 16 years of age and must join a fire department or rescue squad in Calvert County. The classes that the students take are college classes and they earn credits towards an associates degree. The program started in 2001 and the classes are eligible for national certification. The students have completed Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and Firefighter 1 and they will be taking Firefighter 2, Haz-mat ops, Rescue Technician – Site Operations, and Engine Company Operations.

If anyone is interested in taking the class next year or in the future or joining a fire department or rescue squad in Calvert County, contact Kim Jones, Recruitment and Retention Specialist at jonesks@co.cal.md.us or 410-535-1600 Ext. 2668.  All can also visit there website at www.calvertfirerescueems.com to learn more about what they offer.
