calvert county new road dedication policy adopted aug 2026

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved three measures Aug. 18 involving land conservation, public art and honorary road dedications.

All three passed as part of the BOCC’s consent agenda without discussion.

Commissioners granted the Southern Calvert Land Trust a property tax credit for a conservation lot in the Drum Point community of Lusby.

County law allows the BOCC to grant credits for qualifying land trust properties subject to conservation easements and used to preserve natural areas, promote conservation, provide public access or maintain wildlife sanctuaries.

According to the county attorney’s memorandum, the property meets those requirements. The credit is expected to reduce county property tax revenue by $44.48 in fiscal 2027.

The BOCC has previously granted credits for 167 other lots owned by the Southern Calvert Land Trust.

Commissioners also authorized a permission letter allowing the Calvert Nature Society to apply for a Maryland State Arts Council grant for a nature-themed tile mosaic at the county-owned Battle Creek Nature Center in Prince Frederick.

The grant would cover the full cost of designing, creating and installing the mosaic on the building’s exterior. Once completed, the society would donate the artwork to the county.

Natural Resources Division employees would handle monitoring, cleaning and routine maintenance. Future repair costs would be shared by the division and Calvert Nature Society, subject to available funding.

The BOCC also adopted a formal policy for dedicating county-owned roads in honor of people with records of public service, significant community contributions, military or first responder sacrifice, or meaningful historical connections to Calvert County.

The dedication would not change a road’s legal name or mailing addresses. Instead, the county would install honorary signs.

Applications require a nonrefundable $50 fee. If approved, that amount will be credited toward the $200 fabrication and installation cost.

The Department of Public Works will review applications and consult with relevant organizations before submitting a written recommendation to the BOCC, which will make the final decision during a public meeting.
