
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) is celebrating another two appointments of district staff for the 2026-27 school year.
At the July 9 Board of Education (BOE) meeting, Superintendent Dr. Marcus Newsome recommended Dr. Cathy Sutton as the new principal of Northern Middle School and Dr. John Baker as the new supervisor of student services.
Dr. Sutton previously served as an English and science teacher at Mill Creek Middle School, as well as an English teacher at Leonardtown High School and an assistant principal at Calvert High School and Calvert Middle School. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a master’s in education administration from McDaniel College and a doctorate in education from the University of Maryland.
Dr. John Baker is currently the director of school psychology in Alexandria City Public Schools. Previously, he worked as a lead psychologist for Alexandria City Public Schools, a clinical supervisor for a charter school in Washington, D.C., a school psychologist in Prince George’s County Public Schools and an intern in school psychology in Howard County Public Schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
In his remarks, Dr. Baker said he was “deeply honored” to be joining the Calvert County Public Schools family.
“I look forward to collaborating with your dedicated staff, family, and community to ensure every student is safe, supported and empowered to succeed.”
Dr. Sutton wasn’t available to attend the BOE meeting on July 9 and was unable to provide in-person remarks. The BOE approved both nominations, 5-0.
