PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — What began as a routine patrol for Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Gilmore quickly turned into an act of compassion when she came across an injured owl lying in the roadway.
The owl, which appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, was in need of urgent care. Without hesitation, Gilmore secured the bird and transported it to a local raptor rescue. The facility is operated by a wildlife rehabilitator she had previously worked with during a similar call years earlier involving another owl in distress.

The owl has since been named Earl, and officials say he is now under the care of the rescue as he begins his recovery. Photos shared by the sheriff’s office captured the moment Gilmore held Earl before the transfer — a quiet reminder of the compassion that often extends beyond the call of duty.
The sheriff’s office thanked Gilmore in a public post, noting, “Thank you, Cpl. Gilmore, for showing compassion both on and off duty.”
Earl’s prognosis remains unknown, but his caregivers and the sheriff’s office are hopeful for a full recovery and eventual return to the wild.
