PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – On June 30, 2022, a Calvert County jury convicted Ilene B. Claggett-Hurley of Owings of 2 counts of Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult, Second Degree Assault, and Reckless Endangerment.

The jury deliberated a mere 44 minutes before returning its verdict.

The Defendant was the primary caregiver for the bedridden, elderly victim.  On December 21, 2021, the Defendant was recorded on nanny-cam video cursing and berating the victim, pulling her forcibly from the bed, and physically abusing her.

Because of her condition, the victim was unable to defend herself or call for help.

After the verdict, Claggett-Hurley’s bond was revoked and she was remanded to the Calvert County Detention Center.

Sentencing is scheduled in October before Judge Andrew S. Rappaport.  The Defendant is facing a total of 25 years incarceration.

Calvert County State’s Attorney Robert Harvey wishes to commend the family of the victim for reporting this matter to the police and for assisting in the prosecution of this case.

He also wishes to commend Assistant State’s Attorney Benjamin G. Lerner for his outstanding work on the case.

  1. I know, firsthand, that old people can tax your last nerve no matter how nice you treat them BUT there is NEVER a time to abuse them physically or verbally! If you can’t control yourself around the elderly, FIND ANOTHER JOB!!!
Put yourself in their place. How do you think you’re going to act if & when you get placed in a nursing home and are bed ridden? Do you think that yelling and beating you will make your life any better?
And that smirk on your face tells me that you’re not one bit remorseful. You are a horrible person!

  2. i wonder where the line is crossed? if your parents are elderly + you call them bad names, is that abuse, or just part of the family relationship?

  3. I know the victim personally..a 100 year old helpless sweet little old lady. I would give anything to punch that smirk off this animals face. Justice for 🌹

  4. For all the people that Ilene showed kindness to and helped over the years, I hope they are present and supportive during this time of need. Surely, accountability is important and consequences are due. However, we all fell from grace at some point in our lives. No one is perfect and surely have skeletons in the closet. Prayers and healing for everyone.

  5. Accountability is important and consequences are due.  However, we all fell from grace in some point of our lives. We’re all not perfect and have buried secrets and bones. Who are we to judge? I pray for strength, peace and healing for ALL during this time. I pray that forgiveness sets on all hearts. For those that Ilene poured her heart out to and helped over the years, your prayers and support is needed. Lord, you are the ultimate and only judge. I pray the final outcome is fair and righteous.

  6. For God’s sake people. Will you please come up with a screen name other than “anonymous”???
